The main advice is having good clean door mats which will trap any grit and outdoor dirt, and a daily cleaning should be with sweep and vacuum or dry ‘dust-catching’ mop.Damp wiping can be carried out using the correct floor cleaner but be careful not to puddle the liquid on the floor.Watch for any signs of wear and tear on areas that get a lot of traffic.

    • Why not use a colored Polyurethane?

A lot of the floor polyurethane have a color included. The only real advantage of this is basically time and convenience during application. The disadvantage is that, with each coat you apply, the color changes and darkens. You are guessing what the final appearance will be.Most importantly, as a colored polyurethane wears with time and traffic, the color starts to be affected immediately.

    • Why do you use a stain and a varnish?

With our process, when we get to the staining stage, we can apply 2 or 3 different options to a small section of the floor for you to choose from. After you chose the new color of your floors, we simply sand these samples off and apply your choice. The varnish or polyurethane is the seal protecting both the wood and the stain color, ensuring that the stain remains consistent for far, far longer.

    • And what are the maintenance options?

The main advice is having good clean door mats which will trap any grit and outdoor dirt, and a daily cleaning should be with sweep and vacuum or dry ‘dust-catching’ mop.Damp wiping can be carried out using the correct floor cleaner but be careful not to puddle the liquid on the floor.Watch for any signs of wear and tear on areas that get a lot of traffic.

    • Should we use varnish, wax or oil?

Each floor finish has its particular strengths and weaknesses but for a home environment with average levels of foot traffic we recommend a commercially polyurethane.

They come in oil or water-based and is used in a restaurant floors, so is far greater and therefore much heavier duty.

If you chose wax for your home, they would require care and periodic re-coating.Oiled floors on the other hand, do not create a protective barrier above the wood but instead the wood absorbs the oil meaning it can repel liquid and dirt. The protective barriers created by any floor finish will eventually wear through and a new coat will need to be applied prior to this occurring.

    • What color will the floor be after sanding?

On our process of sanding, we restore the wood floors to its natural form color, so it all depends on what your wood your floor is made from, hardwoods like oak, mahogany and maple tend to be darker and softwood pine can vary from a pale honey color to a dark, golden brown. After restoring the wood floors to its natural color most woods can be stained, bleached, waxed or oiled to be whatever color you’d like them to be.

    • How are the floor gaps filled?

We use standard one-part wood filler as the same color of the flooring between the floorboard's cracks, dents, and holes and then this wood filler will be sanded down to be level with the boards prior to staining and finishing.

    • Should I consider filling the gaps between my floorboards?

Wood filler is excellent for repairing cracks, dents, and splits or holes in unfinished floorboards.Gap-filling between floorboards is used on floors for aesthetic appeal as a gap-filled floor creates a seamless visual appearance. But with the time as the wood floor moves again you may see cracks again in this filler between floorboards.

    • How long does it take to sand a floor?

All our floor sand and finish come with 3 coats of poly and the process for an average-sized house up to 1500 Sq/Ft should take 3-4 days from start to finishing.Unforeseen circumstances such as repairs to the floor or the replacement of some boards may mean the job will take longer. You also need to factor in additional time to let the varnish, wax or oil finish fully cure, during which time the floor should not be walked on.

    • Do your sanding machines make lots of dust?

It is inevitable that some dust will be produced, however our professional sanding machines are 98% dust free.Additionally, we tape up doors to other rooms and isolate the stairwell and cabinets with plastic sheeting, so dust does not spread throughout the house.
